Survival and Strength: A Survivor's Story with Sadie Soliday

During the month of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness month, I was able to sit down and interview a young woman who is a courageous survivor of domestic violence, Sadie Soliday. Her powerful journey offers others insight, strength, and hope to those navigating their own paths to healing.

Sadie recounted the beginning of her relationship with her best friend, who eventually became her husband in 2022. Despite a strong start, Sadie's marriage quickly took a dark turn. Over time, what began as the challenges of a new marriage devolved into a cycle of financial, emotional, and physical abuse.

Sadie explained how she initially overlooked the warning signs of manipulation, believing they could work through the issues. However, by the start of 2023, the severity and frequency of these abuses escalated, prompting Sadie to seek help, even as she wrestled with her instincts to protect her husband and maintain appearances.

An especially pivotal moment arose when an argument over minor household issues spiraled into a physical altercation where Sadie was nearly suffocated by her husband. This incident marked a turning point, compelling Sadie to begin sharing her experiences with her therapist, acknowledging the pattern of escalating violence.

Despite attempts to smooth things over, tensions persisted, culminating in a confrontation at their home. When Sadie's husband changed the locks and demanded submission she could not give, the situation reached a breaking point. His escalating threats and controlling behaviors foreshadowed a terrifying act of violence.

In a moment of unimaginable horror and clarity, Sadie's husband shot her in the chest. During this life-threatening situation, Sadie's training in behavioral therapy guided her responses, potentially saving her life, as she maintained a calm demeanor and strategic thinking.

After calling 9-1-1 and confessing what he had done, Sadie's husband was detained, allowing emergency responders to provide the lifesaving care she needed. Through a combination of survival instinct, divine intervention, and her professional background, Sadie emerged from this ordeal with a renewed sense of purpose.

Sadie's journey underscores the importance of educating others on domestic violence during awareness months and beyond, highlighting the critical role of dedicated support networks and inner resilience.

Sadie's story poignantly illustrates both the trauma and tenacity that accompany domestic abuse survivorship. Her story serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging others to seek help and trust their instincts in dangerous situations.
